SHOULD I HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

Are you considering a home renovation or new build project? Are you thinking of hiring an interior designer, but aren’t sure if it’s the right move for you? You’ve come to the right place. I’m going to give you insight to why you should hire a professional interior designer or why maybe that’s not the best move for you or your project.

FUNCTION | designing with a purpose

Interior Designers aren’t just there to help you with your furniture, or home decor needs. We have insight to how a home functions and the construction process. We’re experts in functional details that look aesthetically pleasing to the eye. We look at every detail to make sure your space is going to function perfectly for you, while looking great.

A kitchen or bathroom for example are some of the most complex elements of a home. There’s many different elements to consider in addition to making sure the spacial perimeters are going to work.

  • Is there enough space for the dishwasher to fully open?
  • Will the island going to look proportionate to the space or does that need to be eliminated/re-visited?
  • Do the cabinets have adequate storage for spices, sheet pans, trash cans, etc.?
  • Has enough functional lighting been considered so the space is properly illuminated?

When hiring an interior designer, you’re not just going to get a beautiful space, but one that is functional!

AESTHETICS | coordinating finishes

We’re also experts in understanding and visualizing how a space will look once completed. We can picture the different finishes all together to know what will work vs, what wont. This is one of the most challenging elements when designing a home or space on your own. By working with an interior designer, we not only know what will work well together, but we have the resources and knowledge of how to actually execute those elements. Giving you exactly what you want.

Interior Designers also have a wealth of knowledge in terms of what kinds of finishes are on the market and associated costs. This is where hiring an interior designer can be helpful to a client and guide a client to understanding what will work aesthetically as well as financially. For instance, it’s well known that quartz countertops are more cost effective than marble. However there’s quite a few great in between options the designers have knowledge of that homeowners may not.

FURNISHINGS | bringing all the details together

While planning a New Construction home for instance, it’s important to see how you’re going to layout furniture in the space. When you hire an interior designer, we’re able to show you how you might be able to utilize your existing furniture in addition to planning for all new pieces. Interior designer’s are able to create space plans to visually show you the multiple ways you might be able to function in a space. This is a critical part of the process to ensure you’re planning for a well designed, yet functional space. Additionally, if you’re not looking to purchase any new furnishings this is an extremely important part of the process. As this will ensure that your existing pieces will work in your new space. It’s not a fun experience once move in day happens and none of your furnishings fit because they weren’t considered.

To Hire or Not to Hire?

Above I’ve laid out all the reasons a professional Interior Designer can be a useful and helpful element in the process of construction. But what is the right decision for your project? Here’s my recommendation.

WHEN NOT TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNER

Are you looking to purchase a home and complete small updates as you go? Then bringing on a designer for the full project may not be the right decision for you. Pinterest can be a great tool to unitize as this will give you ideas of what looks nice together. From there you can execute this on your own timeline and schedule.

WHEN TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNER

Are you looking to complete an extensive renovation, new home design, or maybe you moved into a home that needs character added to all the spaces? If so, I would highly recommend hiring a professional. This is where the process can become intimidating and a professional interior designer can really help guide you to what will work in your space. Additionally, hiring a professional can take the stress aspect away. We are able to see the space as a whole and make sure every element ties together so that in the end you have a beautifully designed, yet functional space.
